I might have the change the name of this blog

It seems like all I talk about is animals on this thing. Well, we got quite a nice surprise this morning. He is quite a cutie.

I went out to the car this morning to get maggie's shoes that she left in the car. When I got closer, I heard a little "meow". Sometimes Mickey goes under Steven's truck to stay dry, but this was a different sound. We tried and tried to get him out, but he wouldn't budge. Finally, Steven came home and opened up the hood of his truck. On his engine, was a cute little boy.

We put him inside and in the bathroom. He is so snuggly. Maggie negotiated some tough terms with Steven and is now the proud owner of a little kitten.

Martha speaks

Maggie loves this show on PBS called Martha Speaks. It's about a dog who eats Alphabet soup one day, but the letters accidentally go to her brain instead of her stomach. This causes her to speak. And she talks non-stop (something that Maggie can really relate to).

It's a really cute show and it's helpful with kids and vocabulary words.

So, Maggie decided that we should get some Alphabet soup and give it to Willie. She really wanted to know what he was thinking and what he would say if he could talk.

Because I'm a good parent (aka a sucker) I took her to Raley's and we got a can of soup. We came home and put it in Willie's bowl. Maggie drew him a picture above his bowl to let him know where his food was located. He really didn't have a problem with knowing where it was, but it's a cute picture.

She was very disappointed when he didn't start talking after lapping up a bowl of alphabet soup. I must admit that I was a little disappointed as well. I wonder what Willie would tell us if he could talk.

Hotel for Dogs

Maggie and I went to the movies this afternoon. They have a special deal for movies on weekday afternoons. It was so interesting to be in the theater with no one else. Maggie kept asking me if we needed to whisper since we were the only ones in the theater. I told her that we didn't, but if I spoke in a normal voice, she would ask me to be quiet!

The movie was pretty cute, but I have to admit that we left early. It got to a sad part and she was ready to leave. She inherited my uncomfortable feeling when something bad is happening on a movie or tv show. I hate that feeling and want to change the channel, if there is a bad twist in the plot. She was begging to leave and so we left.

The movie's subplot is that the main characters are teenagers who are in foster care and can't be placed anywhere because they are too old. Their parents died and they are in an awful home. This hit a little too close to home, so I didn't protest too much when she was ready to go.

However, it fulfilled Maggie's need to see a lot of cute puppies doing adorable things. The dogs were pretty stinkin' cute!

Beauty school

Tonight, Paula Deen came on tv. (Oh wow, I didn't even mean to start talking about Paula again. It just happened.) It was all about chocolate. Maggie and I giggled and snuggled down on the sofa to watch the magic.

Maggie kept saying how wonderful this episode was and even ranked it up there with the last episode we watched that was dedicated to butter.

Then, she got her little chair and decided that she would be my hair dresser and fix my hair. She got out a hair brush and some hairbands and pretend spray. It was so fun and I love it when someone plays with my hair. This went on for an hour. She even made a pretend sink where I put my head under a pretend shower so she could wet my hair.

She put big blankets on my legs and told me to pretend like I was at the spa and to just "freelax" for a little while. I love these little times where I can turn off the other distractions and just enjoy being girly with my little girl.

A nice long nap

Wednesdays are long days for Maggie. In the morning, we have MOPS. Then, after lunch, she goes to preschool. She comes home and eats dinner and then goes to Awanas. It's funny because the other days are not nearly as busy. In fact, we were so bored yesterday trying to find something to fill up the afternoon.

So, when I picked her up from Awanas, her teacher said that she was really tired tonight. She told her teacher that "her mommy won't let her take a nap anymore because then she won't go to sleep at night".

Then, Maggie told me that she fell asleep during a veggie tales movie tonight. She took a "nice long nap" during the movie and now doesn't need to go to bed tonight. Great.

Tom and Bob

What do these two men have in common?

They are 2 of my absolute favorite musicians (behind my beloved Neil Diamond). I love them. However, my husband thinks that they have the distinctive ability to sing through their noses. To say he is not a fan is an understatement.

From teaching Introductory Psychology over and over, I know that our sense of hearing brings back powerful memories. In terms of emotions, it falls behind our sense of smells, but it's still a pretty strong one. Hearing a song takes me back to where I was when I heard the song or who I was with.

Tom Petty reminds me of my senior year of high school. I had an old tape (wow, that dates me) from my best friend, Mary. I listened to it over and over. I think it was Full Moon Fever. There was a song on it called Zoombie Zoo. It made no sense at all, but it was just so different sounding. I randomly heard it on the radio the other day and called my brother (on my bluetooth since I'm in California and I follow the rules of the road). I told him that I heard Zoombie Zoo and I thought about him. He said that people call him a lot and tell him that songs remind them of him. I guess because he is such a music lover.

Tom Petty also reminds me of the concert that Mary and I went to right after our freshmen year of college started. We went to different colleges, but met in Atlanta at the Omni and saw Tom Petty there. We were shocked by all the old people around us. They were just sitting there politely listening to the music. We'd never been to a concert like this. When American Girl started, we got up and started dancing together much to the shock of the "old" people around us. (Side note: These old people are probably my age now. ugh) It was such a fun time together, but a defining moment in our friendship, too. We tried to keep in touch in college, but kind of went different ways. This was one of the last real times that we spent together.

My love for Bob Dylan started in the same way. Mary introduced me to him with another mix tape. It just fit well with me and my "deep" and "introspective" self at the wise age of 17. I loved how it sounded different than other pop music on the radio and had more of a message behind the lyrics. I was probably so annoying to my roommate in college. Sorry, Brandy.

My grandmother told me that the first time she ever smelled pot was at a Bob Dylan concert. She was an adult and had gone with a friend. She was not a fan of Bob Dylan, like most of my family. She started smelling something funny and then started breaking out in a bad rash. She was allergic to it! How hilarious that she allergic to the smell of it.

I feel like for the past 4 years or so, I have been in the mommy zone of music. As much as I love Dan Zanes and Laurie Berkner, I am ready to listen to music that I like to listen to again. I think I will have to pull out my old mix tapes and figure out who it is that I like now.
